Brain Damage by kourinthellama Brain Damage by kourinthellama
The first submission after returning from London :)

So, this took me quite some time. I got the idea in a hotel on the German-Austrian border, when we were on our way to Italy. Them, as time passed, I developed the final look of the pic, and started inking. Ever since I started inking, I'd been doing it bit by bit, a bit in Tirrenia, where I started the drawing itself, a bit in Rome, a bit in Warsaw, but I finished it in London. And you know what? I am damn PROUD of this. Try inking in an A4 paper with nothing but a 0.25mm rapitograph. Frustrating? Yes. Very. But worth it.

So! Maciek. Yes, again ;P As some of you might have noticed from the title, this is heavily inspired by the Pink Floyd song, "Brain Damage", off the "The Dark Side Of The Moon" album (just one of the best albums in history). I had a phase when I listened to the song over and over for the first week or so of our italian voyage, and it stuck in my head to be mulled over. Oddly enough, when I was in London, the EXACT same thing happened with "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Part One)" off the "Wish You Were Here" album... Anyway! The lyrics made me think of Maciek and his not-very-happy two years in the mental institute, and how he got out of there and felt as if he'd been changed against his will, by force, and the hate he had for his new self. Creepy stuff.

100% black Rotring ink (using a 0.25mm Rotring rapitograph) on 155g/m2 paper.

"Brain Damage"
Pink Floyd

The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
Got to keep the loonies on the path

The lunatic is in the hall
The lunatics are in my hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You re-arrange me 'til I'm sane
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

(PS. Now it's hit me that that flurry think Maciek is holding looks like that thing the bloke from Inuyasha has  ;))

Facinating stuff, love. I admire your ability to put that much detail into your art--I love all the small, delicate lines of ink. Your efforts were well worth it, I assure you.

I like the three subtle references to the original song/album, and how you skillfully rendered the strings attached to the puppet-thing. I also like how the madness of the picture is geometric. (The puppets to be rearranged are all made of simplistic geometric shapes strung together, I mean.) DSotM was about madness, but it was expressed in a calculated and controlled fashion, and you've captured that spirit in this image: of the Machine that actually causes the Brain Damage, if you like.

Simply beautiful work man

You can tell how much thought went into this, and that gives it a wonderful atmosphere and feeling.

Not to mention how great it is at a technical level

Sweet. You've got a lot to be proud of here! I like the textures and how you've managed to give it a really dark feel without losing any detail. Very nicely done.

This piece reminded me of Floyd even before I read your description. It makes me think of the animation in The Wall.

Absolutly lovely. Love how it seems as if your looking at the whole sound of the song in this picture.
And the button on his belt is a nice touch.
I've often done alot of Pink Floyd Dark Side Tributes, but this blows me right out of the water. :+favlove:

This reminds me of the work by the artist who illustrated Jack Pretlutsky's scary book of children's poems called "The Headless Horseman Rides Tonight". Very scary, very memorable. This is frightening and beautiful.

:o You may have hated that pen, hell, I would - but look at all the textures... even where you painted it all black.

A doll on strings? (the fact that they're attached to his ears made me chuckle a bit :) )

And if I also double posted, well, I accidently hit submit with my slippy mouse before I had even written anything - go me!

Actually, I'm not so happy about that texture on the black sky. But I guess it adds to the psycho-nutcase feel of it, as if the sky was melting or something

You know, when I drew those earrings on Maciek they made me think of the ear-tags cows have

You in fact did NOT double post! Hoorah for you!

Or that the sky was fake. Or black paint on wood. Dunno. Gives a bit of interesting things to look at, imo.

Poor Maciek :o
